[Live Recap] “Master’s Sun” Episode 14

Selective memory is a tricky thing if you don’t gain control over it and it gets away from you. In Joong Won’s case, it ran away at full speed. He never had a chance to hold onto his denials cuz the facts kept knocking down all his attempts at repressing his memory. I bet he really did think he could go on living in the dark, but fate in the form of that necklace just kept turning that light back on again.

Written before it aired:

I wonder what’s worse – remembering just pieces that don’t add up to anything concrete or not being able to let go and forget. Based on the preview, Joong Won is starting to put two and two together about the kind of person Gong Sil was to him, but he doesn’t have all the answers. He senses that he is seeking out Gong Sil’s attention, but he doesn’t know why yet. I have to side with Gong Sil and say she is going through the worst part of all this. She is the one who has to willingly turn her back on love pretending it didn’t happen. I lost track of how many times she literally turned around so Joong Won wouldn’t see her face. It’s like she was afraid that facing him would mean she couldn’t hide her feelings for him. When he asked her to turn around and face him as she walked away, Joong Won didn’t sound like someone who was ready to let her go and Gong Sil didn’t sound convincing when she said “I don’t need you anymore.” I wonder if he is going to remember all his feelings for her in one great tidal wave of emotions. I sincerely hope so since every scene so far where Joong Won let his emotions control his actions, we got the best out of him – all the sincerity, no calculations, wild abandon, mixed with overwhelming love.

*I think I must have broken every record and watched that BTS of the rooftop kiss like a million times. If their last kiss scene hardly had any NGs, they made up for it this time cuz they kissed a lot. The director really knew how he wanted this scene to play out cuz he advised So Ji Sub to pull her to him for the kiss. The hilarious part is when the director wanted them to film it with movement – meaning with their mouths open so So Ji Sub said to him that would get messy looking. The English subs said “throwing your lips away” but in Korean he said standing there “with lips parted.” Then he had to ask Gong Hyo Jin if that was okay to do -”if the lips part, that’s ok right?” He asked that in jeondae and touched her arm. He must have been nervous or something cuz most times he speaks to her in banmal, but in that moment as he asked permission, he switched to jeondae so it was adorable.

I find it so interesting that So Ji Sub is still speaking to the director using jeondae after all these weeks of filming. It speaks to his professionalism and respect for elders. Younger actors tend to drop the jeondae from time to time, but So Ji Sub is consistent.

Episode 14 

Starts from Joong Won asking are you Tae Yang. GS: you don’t even remember me so how did you come here. he says I don’t know who you are - but I don’t know why – you seem like a really important person. what are you to me? Gong Sil: you seem to have come expecting something major but as you see – just think of it simply. I’m a poor woman with no money and you are a wealthy great president so what could I be. Joong Won: I heard you went around saying I am a special person to you. what about me and how am I special to you. Gong Sil: while on my way I got a ride from you. you were the president of Kingdom. somehow I thought I should catch you so I got hired for a part time job and chased after you. cuz I said I was so lonely and sad, you started taking care of me. when I was having a hard time you helped me and got me a job. you had an event at the hotel for me. that’s how you became a special person to me. Joong Won: you are saying I put someone like you next to me. that would never happen. is this building yours by any chance? Gong Sil: you told me not to live somewhere like this and got me a home and said you would buy me a car. Joong Won: I did? the joking is offensive. you are a candy that lives in a gositel so that means I am the wealthy pushover. that I played with a woman with no appeal like you. I did? Gong Sil: my sixth sense/sexiness is different from others. Joong Won: no matter where I look – you don’t have any sexiness that I would fall for. Gong Sil: you fell for me. cuz it was so hard to stick to you so I wasn’t going to easily get lost but while you were with me you got hurt. so I was sorry and was going to get away from you now. with the money you deposited a lot into my account, I was going to think of that as payment for getting lost now. I will use it well. thank you during all that time. leave. she walks away but he holds her back and asks is that really all of it? fine – if that’s how we played – I will try hugging you again -then the answer will come out what you were to me. he starts to lead her inside, but she pulls away and says don’t lay a hand on my body. I told you it was the end. He says a relationship like that – you don’t end it I do. what? you clung to me and I let you stick to me. if I see your bank account, the calculations will come out right away how much you are worth. I don’t think that is all of it. while I couldn’t remember a lot has changed. I feel stunned but I don’t dislike it. is that by any chance cuz of you. I feel like I lost something big – is that with you. she holds her necklace and says there is something you left here -wait and I will return it to you. She goes to get it for him.

She goes in and gets his beer and gives it to him saying take it with you. this is all of it – what’s left after playing with me. you asked me to be a woman who will easily get lost so I am thinking of doing that so go now. he asks did I really drink stuff like this and play with you? she nods yes. Joong Won: if this was all it was then fine. thanks – for getting lost, for returning it. she says don’t come again and walks off.

At his home, Joong Won says that woman’s name is Tae Gong Sil – you know her don’t you? Seuk Chul asks do you remember? Joong Won: I have no memories. Kim is out on vacation and you always keep an eye on me so report what you remember. did I openly play with that woman (as in have a physical relationship with her) Seuk Chul says the rumors spread and it came out anywhere. I will relay to you what I saw and heard. you went really far with her. Joong Won: keep going. Seuk Chul: at first I think you were thinking it would be just casual. flashback to Joong Won saying to them – we decided to give and take meaningless skinship. Joong Won: a sixth sense/sexiness that is different from others. that I fell for that. Seuk Chul: you normally didn’t care what others thought. you just did your style and openly went around hugging her. Joong Won: so? Seuk Chul: with the Saejin group daughter, even though talk of marriage came out, you said you couldn’t break up with her (Gong Sil). flashback to Joong Won saying I wont send her away. I cant not see her so I will safely get married first and keep seeing her. Seuk Chul: from what I could see Bang Sil is not like most women too. in front of the vase you got as your engagement gift, she said she would break it and looked your aunt in her eyes. flashback to Seuk Chul’s version of that moment when Gong Sil tossed the vase and showed the aunt attitude saying it’s rude – I told you to break it. Sung Ran: are you saying somehow you will break Joong Won’s marriage? Gong Sil: cuz it’s dangerous. I will break it for sure. be careful. Seuk Chul: that woman attested like that and broke the vase and your engagement. Joong Won: I really played dangerously. Seuk chul: cuz you fell so deep, are you going to start over again now. he reaches for a beer but Joong Won stops him. he reminds him how Seuk Chul’s stomach is pooching out and tells him to leave now. Seuk Chul: I told you what I know so you interpret it on your own.

Joong Won puts his beer back in his fridge and says it’s good my memories are gone of when I lost my senses and played

Gong Sil says it would really be nice to be able to drink alcohol at a time like this. do you know what I feel the most indignant about cuz I can see ghosts. I cant drink a drop of alcohol cuz I am scared. Kang Woo: you said president Joo was your bunker didn’t you? if you stayed by his side you could have done anything. will you really be ok without him? Gong Sil: it is too bad. if we were together – it would have been really nice to hold hands and have a can of beer. Kang Woo: I am worried -before you met president Joo – cuz you were scared you avoided and lived in the gositel hiding - that you might go back to doing that I am worried. Gong Sil: on that day at the hospital, I saw the scariest spirit/soul in the world (Joong Won). I have never been that scared. talking about him being my bunker – I wont drag him into my world again. compared to that I’m not scared of other ghosts. I can handle/endure it. Kang Woo:his memories have all been erased. so hiding your heart and pain-watching just you enduring it- it’s upsetting. Gong Sil:I told you I’m keeping it all in my heart so it’s correct to calculate that it’s all my fault

Joong Won touches his stab wound and wonders if it reached his heart too (piercing it too). something is empty. I feel like I gave it to that woman -she said I threw it away after playing. he looks at his reflection and says dont go and get it back again.

Gong Sil tells Kang Woo -don’t worry about me cuz I wont live again holed up. I am thinking of going back to school next year. KW: for real? GS: yes now it’s the extent that I can ask the ghost in the seat next to me for answers during tests. KW: then it wont be a problem becoming the top of the class (of her major). GS: I was originally head of the class. KW: are you bragging? GS: yes. I won all the prizes to be won -the poster child of excellence. he says then don’t give up and become that great/excellent impressive person and I will guard/protect you - I am really good at protecting/guarding someone. so she says ah yes -you are more than capable of protecting the blue house (secret service). to be guarded by you – I would have to become president at least. they cheer for her to become successful. the ghost tries to reach for her drink so she says you have coffee. she asks if KW is scared there is a ghost here. he says I am not scared anymore and clinks with the ghost too.

next day GS tells herself I can do well. she finds the photo and remembers how HJ asked to borrow her body when JW comes back again. she hears a knock outside

the shaman came for a visit and asks if everything went well. GS says he came back again. shaman asks why didn’t you return his belonging (the sun necklace). you didn’t forget our deal right? GS asks what should I do. shaman says you cant live normal again. she wants GS to help her with the dead. GS is standing in the dark at a cemetery calling out to a ghost. she is terrified. a ghost pops up so GS ducks. a male ghost is there along with some others. she calls out for the specific ghost she needs to find to take with her. GS asks the girl ghost – did you not marry? when you died if you didn’t get married – do you want to get marry. the shaman wants her to gather single ghosts for her.

YR says I cant act but her manage says the role only needs your face and body like a bond girl. they see GS with the shaman

the shaman is with some parents. the mom asks if her child isn’t lonely and GS looks at the two ghosts – the girl and boy ghosts and GS says yes (he isn’t lonely)

KW and YR talk about her melo movie. she says crying doesn’t suit me – I hate it. he says yes crying doesn’t suit you. you are cool so you will do well. she asks wont you be my bodyguard for a star but he says no. she repeats what the shaman and GS said with those parents – that they said please take care of my son.

KW asks if GS is meeting that shaman. GS says she asked me for a favor. don’t worry she knows me well.

GS walks away and remembers how the shaman said forget about living normally forever

JW is in a business meeting. he asks jin joo for what Kim recorded. he finds the recording and listens to it and hears GS reading to him.

JW goes to her office and goes in. he says she was here but I don’t remember anything. it’s empty. he stands by the doorway. his aunt comes over and sees him there.

GS and the shaman are meeting with a man. GS says to him – she said she would be with you forever. the female ghost is next to him so GS says I will convince her. GS tells the ghost – since this person is alive -you are standing in his path to his future

Hanna and SR are nearby and the aunt wants to eat together with JW cuz she likes hanna. Hanna points out the shaman. is she her friend. SR says how that woman sets up matches for the dead. SR asks to meet the shaman

SR asks what she wanted last time from GS - to call ghosts.

JW comes over and hears GS talking to the man so he asks is my candy lonely already and touches her shoulder so the female ghost is gone. the client thinks JW was set up too and tells the man to get lost if you don’t want to die. GS tries to go after the client but JW tells her to endure it even if she is lonely since he deposited a lot into her account

JW goes to meet his aunt and hanna and notices her sun necklace and asks if they know each other from before

Kim meets with a friend of Hanna and hears that Hanna had facial reconstruction. cuz she doesn’t have the face he knows. he is going to go to korea and find her so the friend says I will find out where she is but Kim says I know where she is and remembers Hanna

SR tells JW that she asked the shaman for a request – to find a ghost.

GS tells the shaman – I was so scared so I didn’t sleep. I have to sleep during the day. the shaman says this one is very special.

they go in and SR tells JW – that woman sees ghost. you worked at kingdom special customer service. I didn’t know you had that skill to see ghosts. she tells JW she stuck to you cuz she sees ghost. do you see ghosts now. GS says yes next to the president. she tells the ghost – cha hee joo – don’t show up again. tell me now – who is the culprit who made you die. JW goes over and holds her hand so HJ’s ghost is gone. GS says I told you not to hold me while I am working. he drags her away

GS says I see ghosts – im more scary than candy huh? he asks I hired you to see ghosts. she tells him how she was his radar. JW says I hired you for that. she says you are scared huh? he says no I am not scared of ghosts. I am scared of people. GS tells him how he got hurt cuz of her so I felt sorry. he asks is that why you went to that shaman. GS says yes and don’t touch me cuz I don’t like it

JW goes back to her empty office. he repeats 9million dollar radar.

GS goes home and sits on her stairs holding her pendant. she remembers how JW said hi 9 million dollar radar. your bunker is here so hide. she says I cant cling to him to be my bunker. KW watches her sitting there

Hanna is at home and says to the mirror – if that woman wasn’t lying – did you stay behind as a ghost. if you are next to me I will apologize. I am sorry unni

*since Hanna was the older twin and Hee Joo was the younger one, Joonni and I think Hee Joo’s ghost is actually Hanna and Hee Joo is impersonating Hanna now. I think since the Hee Joo ghost wants to borrow Gong Sil’s body so much, it’s to take over it and not actually just borrow it.

JW asks so I was trying to find HJ’s culprit. KW says yes and GS was next to you. JW asks is that why she was my 9 million dollar radar. KW says yes do you remember now. do you not need her anymore. it would be nice if you didn’t need her anymore. he bows and leaves. JW wonders why it’s bugging him. he is dead if I catch him (the one who stabbed him)

The killer comes and says that woman is at Kingdom. he remembers how Gong Sil said it doesn’t end when a person dies. he walks away and Kang Woo notices him.

The killer goes to her office and Kang Woo stands behind him. the man throws boxes at Kang Woo. they fight and Kang Woo kicks him down. He catches the killer

The killer keeps asking to meet that woman. after hearing what she said I feel like I will go crazy. Kang Woo asks did you come to kill Tae Gong Sil? the man begs please let me meet her. she said the dead kid was watching me. cuz of that I cant do anything. Kang Woo says that will be your punishment (for your crime) for the rest of your life. Joong Won goes over and asks the guy – are you the one who put the screwdriver in my back? the killer says I didn’t mean to stab you – you were blocking that woman and got stabbed in her place. Joong Won: I got stabbed in her place? the man says yes you suddenly jumped in and startled me. I really wasn’t thinking of stabbing on purpose. Joong Won asks Seuk Chul – what happened. you said I followed that woman. so why would I want to die in her place and jump in. Seuk Chul doesn’t reply so Kang Woo speaks up and says it’s correct - you were protecting Tae Gong Sil and almost died.

Joong Won is alone in her office and says I am going crazy. this is the ghost office. how crazy was I for that woman? they say something is here – do you guys know? (he asks the ghosts) does she really not need me? it’s bitter – it’s really bitter. (without pronouns he could have meant – can I really do without her)

Gong Sil is telling the shaman how ghosts have their own tastes (so it’s not easy matchmaking for them) so if you stick them with ghosts they don’t like -they come and find me at night and torment me. anyhow – could I find out the reason why I ended up being able to see ghosts? shaman says you were in a coma for 3 years so your soul/spirit wandered for 3 years so you could see ghosts. Gong Sil: I went wandering around? where? shaman says I don’t know either.

Han finds out from Gong Ri that Gong Sil’s accident was in the mountains and she wasn’t found for ten days. they found her but she didn’t wake up for 3 years. she was perfectly fine but didn’t wake up.

A man comes over with two mugs and tells the coffee ghost to drink up. he can see the ghost. he asks cuz you cant get coffee from Gong Sil these days so do you feel sad. we cant leave her to continue going around like that. keep watching her. did she totally break up with that guy? should I meet Gong Sil now. will she recognize me? the ghost replies with shrugs and smiles

*So this new guy has the same ability as Gong Sil and they probably met when she was in her coma state when she picked up her ghost seeing ability

They run into each other and Kang Woo says you look tired – are you having a hard time? Gong Sil says it’s hard to become a proficient person. I heard the culprit was caught- the police called and said he was caught at kingdom. Kang Woo pretends not to know who caught him and says that’s good. I don’t know who caught him but they did something big. Gong Sil: I am so grateful. Kang Woo: when you are really scared -try calling out my name once. who knows – I might show up like a ghost. she thanks him and tells him to sleep well and goes up

Kang Woo follows her to the graveyard. he sees how scared she is and feels bad for her walking around

He follows her back home and watches her walk up the stairs. he says when you are scared – just once try calling out my name.

Hanna opens the box and Sung Ran says this is the wine Joong Won likes so much and says to Joong Won – you said you would be taking your girlfriend to the palace hotel event party. Joong Won: I don’t remember. Sung Ran: you will need a partner. she asks Hanna to go with him. Hanna: I would like that. Seuk Chul excuses himself and goes over to Joong Won. your aunt told me not to tell you so I kept my mouth shut but while you were in the hospital, Tae Gong Sil came every day. she cried a lot. Joong Won: you said my heart stopped before surgery. Seuk Chul: yes you died and came back to life. Joong Won: died and came to life? Seuk Chul: of course since you are fine and living well, that level of woman is right for you (meaning Hanna) but you threw your life to save that woman who lives in the gositel -Tae Gong Sil who sees ghosts. Joong Won mutters I cant remember and gets up and sees Hanna’s necklace. Sung Ran says Hanna said she has time and will go with you. Joong Won agrees. ghost Hee Joo watches Hanna

Gong Sil goes to the office to meet Kim. are you here? where did he go. she gets a text. what should I do -wait? the door opens so she walks in. she asks are you there but Joong Won shuts the door behind her and asks did you think it was a ghost. she asks what about Kim. he says you wouldn’t answer my calls and you weren’t home when I went so I sent that text. I can text now. Gong Sil: why did you call me here. Joong Won: I have something to sort through and need to confirm something. follow me

He invites her to sit. Joong Won: I thought it over carefully-you are a woman who lives in a gositel who isn’t sexy at all, but I got bewitched by another sixth sense so while rescuing you I got stabbed in the back with a driver and almost died. isn’t that correct? Gong Sil: yes that’s right. Joong Won: I am curious what I was feeling in that last moment. you know don’t you? she says how would I know that? JW: while I was having my surgery -you were there. my heart stopped so I died. if I die I become a ghost and you can see ghosts. you saw me didn’t you? I almost died cuz of you so didn’t I go and find you? she says yes you came to find me. JW: a person will be the most truthful in his last moment cuz there is nothing to pick on. whatever it is – he would have spoken truthfully. what did I say to you. you heard that and got scared and avoided me huh? she says yes I heard something really frightening. Joong Won: something scary? cuz I met someone like you and almost died so did I resent you? she shakes her head no. Joong Won: that it was unfair I went (died) alone -did I throw a fit you should go (die) with me? she shakes her head no. Joong Won: if I did that much (went that far to die in her place) I would have wanted to find my memory – cuz I can handle that much. I must have gone to that extent. he looks over at her and she remembers how he said Tae Gong Sil – I love you. he leans in and stares into her face searching for a glimpse of truth. Joong Won: if I went to that extent – if I look at you like this - shouldn’t I remember even one scene of liking you like crazy. why don’t I remember a single thing? she tells him-your memories will never come back. you are safe. dont worry. Joong Won: do you really not need that? she says I don’t need it. Joong Won: fine. cuz I lost it I was trying to find it. but from now on I wont hang around you or call you again. Gong Sil: that’s what I want. Joong Won: even if I see you I wont act like I know you and wont hold onto you. she says I will do that too. I will be going. she walks away and he mutters to her back – if it’s not ok to not have it – look back - then just once I will try finding it. she walks out without looking back. he says it stings a lot (it’s bitter)

She goes out and holds her pendant saying it’s all over now

Kang Woo goes and asks to get info about Hanna Brown who is in charge of this fall exhibit. he reads a pamphlet about her and searches on the computer. he says she has a totally different face -but her blood type is the same. what happened

He goes downstairs and runs into Kim on his way in. Kang Woo: the woman who is a twin with Cha Hee Joo showed up. Kim asks is it Hanna Brown? Kang Woo: how did you know. Kim: Cha Hee Joo and Hanna Brown are my twin nieces. that is the reason I was protecting Joogoon all that time.

Hanna is in the car with Joong Won. she says aren’t you going cuz your aunt pushed you into it. he says it doesn’t matter and glances at her necklace and resumes looking out the window

Gong Sil and the shaman are with the ghost watching that man celebrating his marriage. Gong Sil explains to the ghost he is married now. leave now. to him – you are just the past. you cant be like the bride by his side. you are dead. the ghost vanishes so Gong Sil asks the shaman – she left so I can go home now too right? 

Gong Sil turns to leave and watches Joong Won walk in with hanna. He looks at Gong Sil then at the shaman and back at Gong Sil. shaman says that person -instead of finding his memory- he put a different future by his side. Joong Won watches Gong Sil touch her necklace and look away from him. hanna calls out his name. he goes up the escalator.

Gong Sil watches him go up and the shaman walks away. ghostHee Joo shows up so Gong Sil says don’t come to me anymore – leave please.

At the party Seuk Chul tells Joong Won -I saw Tae Gong Sil in the lobby with madam Go. Joong Won: it has nothing to do with me but what. Seuk Chul: I heard from your aunt that Tae Gong Sil has a strange contract with Go and is bound for the rest of her life. Tae Gong Sil seems to have become someone from that other world.

Gong Sil meets with ghost Hee Joo on the roof and says I cant lend you my body cuz I have to live too

Joong Won asks the shaman – what is that contract that has Tae Gong Sil bound. shaman says seeing how you are interested - you must want to find your memory but he denies it. Joong Won: that’s not it. I don’t want to find my memory. just tell me what the contract is – is it something I can repay with money? how much will do? but if I wanted to regain my memory – could I? the shaman says you can get it back – should I tell you how? he says no I don’t want to know. she says it’s really easy. the moment you woke up you just have to recall what disappeared. Joong Won: it’s ok. I already said it’s ok not to have it (his memory) to her. “I’m dying – it’s the end-there is no future” if it wasn’t that situation – I said something I would have never said freely. I don’t want to get those words back and handle that and make things complicated again. shaman says the words you tossed out to her, that woman is cleaning up after and handling it on her own alone. Joong Won: I know so it keeps bugging me. shaman: I understand -you are being cowardly towards Tae Yang - just be happy as you are. Joong Won: just tell me how much the contract is. shaman says that woman gave all of herself. calculate how much it is- she paid up. she walks away and leaves him reeling in shock

Joong Won remembers looking at Gong Sil sitting in the dark in her office

Sung Ran asks if he isn’t feeling well and Joong Won says I am hurting. not just to the extent that I need attention – to tell the truth I am hurting a lot. Hanna asks are you okay. he looks at her pendant and says my eyes kept going to it from the start -I kept seeing it, but maybe I wanted to act like I didn’t. (he could easily be referring to Gong Sil as well as he says that) he looks down at his hand and remembers that moment when the pendant disappeared. Sung Ran asks are you not feeling well. he says I have to go and find what I lost. hanna asks isn’t this what you kept looking at (and holds her necklace). Joong Won: it’s the same but that’s not the real one. he leaves

Gong Sil tells Hee Joo’s ghost – it’s really over with that person – look. She takes off her necklace. I will throw this away so don’t come and find me again. She is about to throw away the necklace but hesitates. Just when she gets ready to toss, Joong Won holds her wrist and Hee Joo’s ghost is gone. Joong Won: did you really think you don’t need your bunker. Gong Sil: did you find your memory. he says yes I really didn’t want to but I found it. Gong Sil: if you didn’t want to then why find it and come? Joong Won: do you think I wanted to remember and came. without my memory I was living comfortably and could have been happy not being involved in the world you live in. Gong Sil: that’s right I liked it cuz it was gone too. I liked it a lot better cuz it was gone. I thought I could live cuz it’s gone so why find it? Joong Won: don’t lie. there is no way you could have lived (well). Tae Gong Sil – you shouldn’t ever be able to live without me. without me, you have to feel like you will die. They stand there facing the truth and each other.
