EXCLUSIVE! VMA Director Hamish Hamilton Dishes On *NSYNC, Taylor Swift, & More! Get The Deets HERE!

exclusive interview hamish hamilton vma director

Between the not-quite-record-breaking numbers and the dozens of HIGHlarious new GIFs that will forever be burned into our retinas, we think it's safe to say Sunday night's VMAs were enjoyed by absolutely everyone nearly everyone except for sad Drake.

And we've got an EXCLUSIVE! interview with one of the big kahunas behind-the-scenes that helped make it happen!

Hamish Hamilton is the Emmy-nominated VMA Director responsible for a large chunk of the aforementioned awesomeness, so we just had to pick his brain on topics like *NSYNC's reunion and the Taylor Swift reaction shots!

Ch-ch-check out the full EXCLUSIVE! interview and see what he had to say…AFTER THE JUMP!!!

What went into directing and putting together Justin Timberlake's VMA performance last night?
Justin directs himself. It's blissfully graceful marrying camera angles, camera technology, and lighting to his concept. He is a true legend and a multi- dimensional artist. He knows what he wants. He would make a wonderful film director.

How hard was it to keep the *NSYNC reunion a secret?
Was it a secret!? I knew for weeks. It was easy until the papers started printing it, then I got asked everyday. People could tell I was lying when I denied it.

If you could direct any other group's reunion for next year's VMAs, who would it be and why?
The Beatles. They are THE dream team.

This year, there was a lot of use of the audience camera, which provided us with some amazing reaction shots! (The Smith Family, Taylor Swift) What effect do you think this had on this year's show?
Oh the audience cameras! Those shots are so tough to get. They add a lot. Taylor was having a great time, and we wanted to show that. It's a split second decision to take a shot or not. It can be the best or worst decision a director ever makes.

The VMAs are always known for pushing the envelope and being one of the most talked about award shows. What kind of pressure did that put on you? Is there anything you would've done differently this year?
MTV pushes the format beyond what has been done before. They innovate and allow artists to musically and visually create performances like no other award show does. It's a really great cultural event. As the Director, I give my all to bring the artists’ visions alive to the audience at home.

Does directing an award show without a specified host present any challenges?
Hosting a major award show is a tough job, and so few people can do it well. I kind of like the energy of directing without a host.
