Many details are still unknown about this afternoon's terrifying car chase in our nation's capital, but police are now confirming that the female suspect was shot dead by police.
D.C. Police and federal law enforcement agents — the ones that weren't furloughed, at least — spoke at length in a (second) late afternoon briefing, and while they're reluctant to release many details on the suspect they have said they pronounced her dead.
Metro PD's representative revealed:
"The suspect was struck by gunfire and was pronounced [dead]… [We] dont know which officers fired… but they did exactly what they were supposed to do and stopped the suspect from breaching the perimeters."
Thankfully, though, a one-year-old child was rescued from the suspect's vehicle and is currently doing OK.
A rep from the U.S. Capitol Police said:
"There was a one year old child in the car, one of our officers initially rescued the child and took him to medical care in the vicinity, and the child was taken to the hospital."
Wow, we're so thankful the kid is OK!
Likewise, we learned the officer injured during the car chase is doing fine, too!
The rep continued:
"The officer is doing well, a 23 year veteran of the U.S. Capitol Police… He was at thehospital when I spoke with him, but he’s gonna be fine."
Other than that, we haven't learned too many details.
Again, earlier today a woman tried to drive her car through a security checkpoint at the White House, and that's when all this unfolded.
Police also say terrorism has been all but ruled out at this point.
Stay tuned for more updates….
